Devotion from the Garden
Timeless
There was so much about this picture that spoke volumes to me, but the power of time might have been the loudest message. The sunset will only be there for minutes more, the pumpkins and flowers will only last a few more days, the buildings in the back were once new and housed many chickens but years later their function has changed. If this photo had sound, you would hear my breath in the video and my children laughing… both of which will cease to exist some day. Time stops for no one or nothing.
This can bring sadness, glimpses of hope or urgency. When we want to cling to a moment, we can be overwhelmed with sadness… “I don’t want this to end.” When times seem more difficult than we think is possible to endure, this gives us some hope…”this too shall pass.” Or when time seems scarce, we find ourselves in a place of urgency… “There isn’t enough time in the day!”
Whatever the effect of time that you find yourself in, remember that there is a Creator that is working in every second and has a plan for each one. If we fail to recognize that this is just a preface to the eternity that is to come, we let time’s power control our thoughts, actions, and motivation. Remember, life is but a vapor; it’s here one moment and then gone the next. And without Christ, this life is meaningless; we began as dust and to dust we will return. God’s design doesn’t leave us trapped by the power of time. He knew that people would desire to cling to this life, but warns that when we do… we will lose it. Rather we are to think on things that are holy, pleasing and eternal. We are to think on things that are TIMELESS!
So when we face struggles, glory in your sufferings because the Lord is made strong in our weakness. When we are in a rush, remember that the only thing required by us in that moment is to love God and love people. When time tells us to be saddened by the end of our experience, God says there are deeper things than our vacations to find joy in. Don’t let time have the power that we often allow it.
Ecclesiastes 1:2
“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
Matthew 10:39
“”If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.
James 4:14
“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”
Genesis 3:19
“By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
2 Corinthians 4:18
“As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
Romans 5:3-5
3 “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Luke 6:23
“Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.”
